Sustainability is a choice with deep roots in our company’s values and the raw material we process.


Cork is a sustainable raw material that commences with the removal of the bark from cork oaks without felling the trees.

This removal fortifies the plant, which regenerates the bark in subsequent years and, in the process, absorbs carbon dioxide at the same time. Cork oak forests constitute an important lung for our planet because they clean the air of impurities and are a sign of biodiversity as the habitat for hundreds of animal species and plant varieties. In addition, cork forests improve organic matter in soil and reduce desertification.

After use, cork stoppers can become a new raw material used in numerous applications. The life cycle of cork is long and circular.

It is a privilege for us to process a natural and highly sustainable raw material, and in 2021 we decided to embark on a sustainability programme which involves the whole company. We want to contribute to the sustainable development of the planet to ensure equality between generations.

The value of people and the community

Cork

Cork is a renewable, sustainable and natural raw material.


It originates from the removal of the bark (decortication) of Quercus Suber trees, an evergreen species native to the Mediterranean basin.

Cork extraction does not damage the tree, which regenerates itself up to twenty times during its life cycle.
In fact respect and care for the tree ensures that the bark is regenerated and it is extracted again once it has reached the thickness necessary for processing. This process of regeneration takes an average of 9-10 years.

The action causes an increase in the tree’s metabolism with the result that the oak will use up to five times the amount of carbon dioxide used by other species.
For this and other reasons, such as its ability to regulate the hydrological cycle, protect against erosion, fire and desertification, the Suber Oak plays an important role in environmental protection.

When cork is being transformed into a stopper (waste from production processes) and after the stopper has been used it can become a new raw material and be reused in endless applications

The properties of cork have been known since ancient times. Its elasticity, inertia and low permeability make it the ideal material for use as a stopper in the wine industry.


The production of cork stoppers is a real example of the circular economy at work because after cutting and punching the planks to obtain natural one-piece stoppers and discs, the waste is shredded and used to create agglomerates for technical stoppers.

What cannot be used for the production of stoppers is channelled into other types of production such as footwear, furniture and green building. There is no waste in this process.

The raw material, from which cork stoppers originate, has huge potential and therefore they are produced by simpler processes than those employed for the production of synthetic materials. In addition, the life cycle of cork is long and circular because, after they are used, the stoppers can become new raw materials for use in numerous other applications.
